Chapter Eighteen

Two days later, Sania sat with Isha, Lara, Camille, and Anne as they discussed the ball in detail. She looked around the parlor, her eyes zeroing in on the empty armchair in front of her, the same one where Nicholas and she had…had…

A tremor washed over her. She wasn’t thinking of that right now. Her mind was already a cauldron churning with a jumble of feelings and emotions. She sifted through everything in her head once again. First and foremost was the revelation of Nicholas’ history. She wanted to murder his evil father for what he’d done to him. His father had emotionally destroyed him, and now thanks to his sire, Nicholas didn’t think he was worthy of being loved.

He’d given her the most earth-shattering pleasure. In his arms, she’d experienced bliss. Even thinking of him and what he’d done to her heated her body to fever pitch.

Taking a sip of water to compose herself, Sania focused on the quandary she had. Already she felt so much for him. She knew it was too soon. But the heart wants what it wants. She was scared to put in words even to herself what she felt for him. Because voicing that emotion even to herself would be irrevocable. It would be final, and it would induce her to tell him what it was that she felt in her heart. And she’d be crushed when he rejected her. Her jaw clenched. She’d never put herself through that.

She’d move past this. Him. She had to.

Isha’s loud laugh jerked her back to the conversation occurring in front of her.

“I swear that gown looked repulsive,” Isha commented. “Gosh, that color of chartreuse should be banned.”

Lara chuckled. “I’m told Lady Farthingham loves the color and has her bedroom tapestry and upholstery all done in that particular shade.”

“How appalling,” Cammy said. “I doubt Lord Farthingham can do his duty with all that putrid color surrounding him.”

Anne snorted. “I think he does his duty quite well, considering Lady Farthingham has already provided him with an heir, two spares, and two daughters, and she’s increasing again. Maybe that color does bring out the beast in him.”

Everyone burst out into gales of laughter. Being with them, Sania forgot her own woes for the moment.

“You all are splendid,” Isha declared with a wide grin. “I think coming here and meeting you all has been the highlight of my life.”

“Isha’s right,” Sania said. “You all are the best, and I’m so glad we are friends. I thank God every day that I decided to come here.”

The other three women grinned. They had welcomed her and Isha into their circle with open arms, and for the first time in a long time, Sania had friends she could rely on.

“I had a lovely time at the ball,” Isha said. “Lara, it was everything I imagined it would be. Thank you again.”

“I’m glad you enjoyed,” Lara said, smiling softly.

“So, what was the verdict on us?” Sania asked the three of them, curious to know what Society had thought of them.
